MandelEgg

Are You Ready for Spring Yet?

Decorate your Easter Egg with the Mandelbrot Set? Choose your 16 color palette using hex digits. First two digits are the Red component. Second two are the Green component. Third two are the Blue component. Each component has 256 shades from 00 to ff. White is ffffff. Black is 000000. Red is ff0000. Green is 00ff00. Blue is 0000ff. Yellow is ffff00. Cyan is 00ffff. Magenta is ff00ff. And in between all these colors, there are 16.7 million others.

The Mandelbrot Egg stretches from -2 to +1 in width and -1.5 to 1.5 in height. The large blue grey turnip in the middle is called the Mandelbrot Set. Zoom into the egg by inputting minimum and maximum boundaries for its width and height. For example, try xmax= -.84735 xmin= -.8474 ymax=.20529 ymin=.20525 . Or this one: xmax= -1.9 xmin= -2 ymax= .015 ymin= -.015 . Play with the number of iterations for more or less color.

To return to initial setup, press the refresh button on your browser menu.

For 5 points, explore these regions in the Mandelbrot egg and screencopy what you see.
  1. Go to xmax = .1 xmin = 0 ymax = .1 ymin = 0. What do you see?
  2. Go to xmax = -.7454255 xmin = -.7454315 ymax = .1130119 ymin = .1130059. Change the number of iterations to 1000. What do you see?
  3. Start at xmax = .30 xmin = .28 ymax = .02 ymin = .01
Change the colors and zoom in from there 3 times by narrowing the range between each max and min value. You narrow the range by adding digits to your x and y values. Make sure your maximums are greater than your minimums. Aim for one of the little Mandelbrot "lagoons".
  4. Go to xmax = -1.335 xmin = -1.355 ymax = -.0642 ymin = -.0486
Change the number of iterations to 1000.
Paint the baby brot in the center with your favorite color. Use another color for all the other 15 colors. Zoom out from there by expanding the range between each max and min value. Continue zooming out till you see the entire Mandelbrot Set.
  5. Go where no one has gone before. Find your own favorite spot in the Mandelbrot Set. The most interesting places are those close to the boundary.
Email your screencopies to your instructor.
